How have our nation’s recent racial and healthcare crises affected the fight to end poverty? What have they taught us about our nation and our community? And how can we use those lessons to strengthen poverty-mitigation efforts?

Join us online as we address these and other pressing questions with national and local leaders in the drive for justice and an end to poverty.

The event will begin with award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien in conversation with Dr. Leah Gunning Francis, dean of faculty at Christian Theological Seminary. This unique conversation will focus on Soledad’s insights about what is happening in our country right now that is creating an opportunity to address poverty in a deeper way.

Following this conversation, Dean Francis will engage local leaders Tony Mason, Patricia Payne, and Yecenia Tostado in a discussion about Central Indiana antipoverty efforts and the barriers that must be overcome to free people trapped in poverty in our city.

Pathways to Promising Employment

Poverty and employment used to be considered mutually exclusive. Today, however, many Central Indiana residents live in or on the verge of poverty despite being employed, and others struggle to attain employment. It’s a problem too big for individual agencies, congregations, or nonprofits to tackle alone. To find pathways to promising employment, our entire community must work together.

The 2023 Faith & Action Spring Conference brought together subject matter experts, organization leaders, and like-minded community members to discuss solutions to the poverty and injustice facing our neighbors. Anchored by keynote speaker Rabbi Sharon Brous, the day included conversations about work and poverty, the sharing of best practices, and testimonies from community members about their journey to promising employment and stability.

Faith & Action Spring Conference: Poverty and Mental Health

Join faith leaders, lay leaders, activists and groups from Central Indiana’s nonprofit sector to “Push Back Poverty” at the Faith & Action Project’s seventh annual spring conference on March 9. This year’s event puts a spotlight on a key factor in generational poverty: mental health. Through candid and informative conversations, we will seek to destigmatize mental health and equip congregations, organizations and individuals to come alongside those who fight twin battles against poverty and mental health.

Faith leaders from across the city gathered to hear from Rev. Dr. Fredrick D. Haynes III, a prophetic pastor, passionate social activist and eloquent orator dedicated to preaching and fighting against racial injustice. Rev. Dr. Haynes brought a message about the importance of engaging and mobilizing congregations to end poverty and injustice.

Efforts to turn back poverty in our community will only succeed if we engage in a concerted, collaborative effort to listen, share, innovate and connect with experts and those who are walking the pathway out of poverty.

Join us to be a part of that effort, as faith communities, nonprofit organizations, concerned individuals and people living in poverty gather to discuss, learn about and shape solutions that increase opportunities for residents throughout the city.

Keynoting the Conference will be national poverty-mitigation leader Nisha Patel, an advocate for “data-driven and heart-led” approaches to increasing mobility from poverty. The former Managing Director of Narrative Change and National Initiatives with Robin Hood and Executive Director of the US Partnership on Mobility from Poverty, Patel will share her thoughts on pursuing solutions in collaboration with people who have lived experience in poverty.

Patel’s keynote will lead into a conversation in which Faith & Action Grant recipients and local residents who have lived in poverty share their journeys, perspectives and vision for lasting change.

Grant Recipients:
$30,000 to BUILD (Believers United In Local Development). This grant will allow BUILD to reach more young men and women with programs that provide unemployed or underemployed youth with accredited training for in-demand skills in the construction industry.

$30,000 to the Near East Area Renewal (NEAR) and Shepherd Community Center. NEAR and the Shepherd Community Center will use their grant to help fund the first intentional intergenerational living and learning center in Indiana, where senior adults and young children will find shelter, care, hospitality, growth and hope. http://www.nearindy.org and http://www.shepherdcommunity.org

$30,000 to the Public Advocates in Community Re-Entry (PACE). PACE will use its grant to remove barriers to successful re-entry for men and women coming out of prison and their families. http://www.paceindy.org

$25,000 to Purposeful Design. With its grant, Purposeful Design plans to add additional training and services to its social enterprise that helps to re-build the lives of men, women and youth who have struggled through poverty, addiction, homelessness and/or prison. http://www.pdindy.org
