The PhD Program in African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric at CTS will host its second Mixed Methods Preaching Conference on May 2-5, 2022, around the theme, “Preaching the Inexhaustible Love of God,” based on Ephesians 3:18. Join PhD Program Director Prof. Frank A. Thomas, current students in the program, and other prominent scholars and preachers for this transformative experience. Please note: this year’s conference will be held entirely online.
The Mixed Methods Preaching Conference is one of the ways in which the PhD Program lives out its mission: “to teach and expose the genius, depth, beauty, history, power, and imagination of the Black preaching tradition in order to generate a preaching renaissance to revive American Christianity in the 21st century.” The conference is designed to help preachers refine and improve their craft and will feature sermons, lectures, homiletical instruction, and preaching labs. In these labs, students from the PhD program will teach method and offer constructive analyses of sermons preached by participants.
CTS is proud and excited to present this second conference as a recipient of the Transformative Grant from the Gilead COMPASS Faith Coordinating Center at Wake Forest School of Divinity. This grant highlights the intersection of HIV-AIDS and communities of color, striving “to educate congregations in order to dispel the stigma and support communities of color who are touched by the aids epidemic.” The conference goal is to help preachers preach powerful sermons indicative of the inexhaustible love of God in Ephesians 3 such that marginalized people living in stigma and without support, for example, persons impacted by the AIDS epidemic, might be fully included and welcomed in the family of God.
This year’s conference is co-hosted by Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas, Dr. Gina Marcia Stewart, pastor of Christ Missionary Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee, and Bishop Claude R. Alexander, pastor of The Park Church of Charlotte, North Carolina.
