Seminary Journal Goes Online
Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana has published Encounter: A Journal of Theological Scholarship continuously since 1940. This makes the journal one of the longest continuously published journals by a freestanding seminary in the country. Encounter publishes three issues a year that include scholarly articles, sermons, and reviews of the latest books in theological studies. It is dedicated to the creative discussion of vital issues among Christians of various communions throughout the world, theologians and other scholars, and believers in Christ and people of other faiths. As of its most recent edition (Volume 83, Number 1) released in September 2023, the full journal is now available for open access digitally.
Butler University School of Religion began publishing Shane Quarterly; the name was changed to Encounter in 1956. The journal is one of very few still published by a progressive, mainline seminary. Encounter is produced and edited by several CTS staff and faculty members. Dr. Scott Seay serves as the journal’s Senior Editor, Dr. Amy Lindeman Allen is the Book Review Editor, and David A. Stout is the Managing Editor.
“Along with my other editorial colleagues, I am proud to continue the 83-year tradition of publishing Encounter at Christian Theological Seminary. Making Encounter available open access and online will greatly increase the visibility and the reach of the journal,” shares Dr. Seay. “Despite the change in format, the mission of Encounter remains the same in publishing the highest quality, creative theological scholarship, sermons, and book reviews to help educate women and men for leadership in Church and community ministries.”
In addition to being available online via open access, Encounter will continue to be indexed, abstracted, and included full text in ATLA Serials databases through a specially negotiated contract.
