Music is interwoven in faith traditions throughout the world and in sacred literature such as the Bible and the Talmud. On Monday, January 23, Rabbi Reuben Zellman, Director of Music at Congregation Beth El in Berkley, California, will present a free, do-it-yourself introduction to Jewish liturgical music from 7pm to 8:30 pm in Room 166 at Christian Theological Seminary. A lecturer in the School of Music at San Francisco State, and a countertenor specializing in early music, Rabbi Zellman performs regularly with San Francisco Renaissance Voices.

During the open-to-the-public workshop, Rabbi Zellman will introduce traditional approaches to Jewish prayer that remain central to today’s synagogue, including biblical cantillation, psalmody, and nusach (prayer modes). Through applying textual and musical procedures using simple singing examples, participants will explore and experience varied approaches to prayer. (No musical or Hebrew knowledge is needed.) Attendees will also learn about the underlying religious and cultural principles of Jewish liturgical music and how these tenants differ from Western approaches. The program is free, but registration is requested. Register here.
