Five years after Christian Theological Seminary (CTS) introduced The Discipleship Project as an immersive and experiential program for Master of Divinity (M.Div) students, the Indianapolis-based Seminary is opening up the program requirements to include individuals living off-campus.
CTS accepts 12 students into The Discipleship Program each year. Each receives full tuition at CTS—paid for the three years of the M.Div program—and a $12,000 yearly stipend. Other benefits include:
- A cohort of support throughout the M.Div program
- Learning best practices around healthy peer groups that will last throughout the long arc of a career in ministry
- Hands on experiences with creative ministries and community efforts to widen the pastoral imagination
- One extensive field trip; past locations have included Ireland, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and civil rights sites in Alabama.
While the revised program removes the residence requirement, The Discipleship Project stays true to its foundational structure rooted in a relational approach to ministry. Inspired by the earliest days of Christian ministry, cohort members will continue to explore ministry in the field, serving diverse needs within the community and practicing in a service area aligned with their calling.
Rob Saler, Director of The Discipleship Project and Executive Director of the Center for Pastoral Excellence and the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Programs, said relaxing the on-campus residence requirement opens the program to more students without compromising the communal nature of the program.
“Since The Discipleship Project’s inception, cohort members have made robust contributions to community life both on campus and in the community,” he said. “Regular cohort meetings, participation in chapel services, interaction with mentors and other relevant on-campus community events that complement classes will preserve the intentional focus on community-based ministry.”
